not being harsh, but that's all it currently is until i get some real proof.
i bet if i prayed to god every night for him to strike me dead on the spot with no natural causes evident, i wouldn't happen.

and i really like Josh's POV, but we can't help that the "christian lifestyle" has become the social norm nowadays. it's what we've gotta do, and alot of them are right really, because it's the law and the law has only improved over time, even if there are major flaws within it.

One of the problems I have with religion is that it indirectly promotes not being the best you can while you're alive. It's pretty much "Didn't do something right/spend enough time with someone while you were alive? Don't worry! You can in the afterlife" where as if you believed this is it, you'd be more inclined to try harder to accomplish things while you're alive, because you're under the mindset that there's no second chance or period after to do whatever you don't do here. For example, thinking you'll see someone again in the afterlife. While it's a very comforting thought, it's like it doesn't matter if you don't spend enough time with them while alive because you can in the afterlife, which is wrong in my opinion because it makes it acceptable to not spend time with them. It's a bit hard for me to put in words sorry ha. My teacher called me cynical last week. I think that's somewhat true, but I prefer the term realistic, because that's what I try to be. The "only living once" card has two sides though. Can't do everything bad because, you only live once and you don't want to waste it. But on the other hand, can't always be safe because you only live once and a little bit of danger/mischief is good.

The reason i used that word is because most of the people on here are going on about not believing in God.....
And the only things people relate God to nowadays is the common concept of a. The Bible. b. Heaven and Hell. c. God being some supreme being who decides to keep you alive or not.

So you just proved my point really by saying... "i bet if i prayed to god every night for him to strike me dead on the spot with no natural causes evident, i wouldn't happen."

i must believe in a supreme being because i wouldn't pray everynight to be killed, because im scared it might happen. And it is kinda mocking religion.

Well that part is a matter of opinion. lol

I just don't understand why I should believe in any kind of god.
I also don't get why people say that bad things happening to you or others is their god 'testing your faith' why the hell would he/she/it do that?

Yes it is, but that doesn't mean it can't be true. Maxims are opinions but are usually regarded as being correct (not saying that's a maxim, but there's an example). Do you have an issue with that statement though?

Most I've encountered reply with "He/she/it works in mysterious ways that we can't understand, so we can't know." Since when do we give up trying to understand something that we currently don't?

TBH, I think a God wouldnt want to readily intervene ALL the time. It would be impossible to answer every prayer, stop every murder etc etc.

I think he created the earth and has sat back and let it flow as we choose to have it.

Isn't God supposed to be omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent?

Not sure though.

Do I believe in God?
That's a really difficult question, even for someone, like me, who reads the Bible - not as often as I would like, and goes to church (about once or twice a month.)

How do we define "God"? Is "God" a supreme being somewhere in space, or is "God" within our hearts?
Is the "afterlife" after our bodies physically die, of after we each believe and live our lives according to Christian principles, (i.e. the life after which we become Christians)?

I do believe there was a bloke called Jesus Christ, and what he said is most important to me, and I try to lead my life according to what he said, the most important being:" Love your neighbour as yourself", which is not the same as "Do unto others as they do unto you.", but is about showing Love to all people.

The way I see it, the majority of the teachings in Christianity are simple morals every decent human being should uphold, I think the stories should be told to kids in school still because they are stories about compassion and respect for others as well as not to murder people (and I suppose in a way if they are scared shitless of doing those things because an almighty sky god shall smite them then maybe that's good too).

But, personally, as with father christmas and the easter bunny, I grew out of believing. Thanks a lot scientific reasoning!

The interesting thing is that there have been and still are scientists who believe in God. Sir Bernard Lovell, the founder of the Jodrell Bank observatory, being one of them.

Both Sir Isaac Newton and Leonhard Euler were both very religious as well, and they were some of the best mathematicians/scientists in history. Some scientists believe that there's no evidence that voids the possibility of a higher being, and that all the current knowledge of the workings of the universe fit nicely into a reality in which a deity rules. Quite interesting their take on things really.
