Police believe a British pop singer who commited suicide on Friday may have been despondent over fears he had crippled a young fan in a botched crowdsurfing attempt.
Ou Est Le Swimming Pool frontman Charles Haddon jumped to his death from the top of his satellite mast at a Belgian rock festival after a 'near riot' during his performance saw a girl suffer back injuries, the Daily Mail reported.
The girl suffered severe injuries to he leg and spine, prompting fears she would be crippled for life, when Haddon, 22, fell on her during the Pukkelpop festival.
Witnesses said the incident took place when Haddon attempted to crowdsurf by jumping from the stage after the band's performance.
"As people were completely surprised by this, they jumped away instead of catching him," one witness said.
"Apparently one girl couldn't get away and was severely injured in the back."
Haddon reportedly feared the girl would be unable to walk again after the incident triggered a near riot among the crowd.
Several hours later, Haddon committed suicide by jumping from an 18m satellite mast after reportedly having a heated argument with other band members.
The band were scheduled to come to Australia for the Parklife festival next month.
The girl is expected to make a full recovery.
