Speak any other languages?
Just wondering if anybody speaks anything other than English? or Scottish...

yeah, unless you've been had it spoonfed to you from a really young age it's really really hard to learn.. but because i speak welsh i've found it so much easier to learn french and spanish as a lot of the language patterns are the same.
my mum can speak cornish! (even though it's died out)

Re: Speak any other languages?
Yeah, we used to read books in Welsh but unless you go to a welsh school or have people always talking welsh around you it's quite hard, still to this day I'm rubbish with mutation :')
Haha awesome, I've never actually seen or heard Cornish before, just known of it.

Re: Speak any other languages?
i struggle with mutation so don't worry ahah! in our school if you don't speak welsh (unless you're in an english lesson) you get punished, no lie.
yeahh cornish is very similar to welsh/breton

Re: Speak any other languages?
Haha it seems funny that it's the other way round nowadays, back in like the 60's they punished you in for speaking in Welsh in class and anybody caught had to wear like a wooden thing on their wrist, if somebody else spoke welsh it was passed to them, whoever wore it at the end of the day got beatings. Although I doubt you get punished as badly as that
at least it's encouraging you to speak both haha, but Swansea is much more Welsh than where I live.
Re: Speak any other languages?
yeah, the "WELSH NOT" i think it was called. these days in our welsh schools we're immediately told that it's our responsibility to speak welsh and if we don't, the welsh language will die out. believe it or not, the only people who speak welsh regularly in my school are the nationalist plaid cymru people, the ones who will have a right go at you if you speak english. our punishment is normally notes to parents blahblahblah.

Re: Speak any other languages?
Yeah that's it I think. And wow bit extreme haha, I see where they're coming from I guess, we were encouraged to speak fully in Welsh during our welsh lessons, but there's plenty of schools near me that are full Welsh speaking.
Re: Speak any other languages?
I speak a fair amount of Spanish. I've been in some sort of Spanish class for the past 7 years (with the last three being full years) and will be taking 2 more full years of Spanish. It also helps that my mother is a Spanish teacher, so I'm around it more than other gringos.
Re: Speak any other languages?
me and my mate sarah made our own language called 'dingue', which means something in french, but i have no idea what and we could speak fluently in it. it was just made up of standard english words, but in an order that nobody else would understand. sounds so stupid, but it worked and it was hilarious.
for example...
'pinstripe mother theresa fed-ex men sniffing the flowers clean up patrol. my little pony green referral.'

Lmao, that's actually brilliant. Did you just spend ages making up words for everything?
Re: Speak any other languages?
yeah jed, hahaha.
i've got it all written down somewhere.
it basically started in french class in first year, we didn't want to learn french, so we started our own.
it was awesome. (:

I have "O" Level (they were before GCSEs and harder) French and Spanish, (and Latin). I learnt Dutch between 1994 and 1997, and passed an exam set by the Universities of The Hague and Leuven for external students.
I've used French on visits to Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland.
I've used Spanish while driving from northern Spain to Lisbon, (and back).
I've used Dutch in the Netherlands and in reading Dutch books, etc.

Loosely speak some German. And learnt some Norwegian which is quite similar to German when I went in '08
Re: Speak any other languages?
I can speak French at A Level standard... but I did that 3 years ago so can pretty much remember nothing...
Did Chinese for a year, was alright at it... but again, havent done it in 2 years. Ni hao
To be fair my English is pretty shockig. My vocabulary is pretty much made up of curses nowadays when I can't think of words.

Re: Speak any other languages?
I got a D in German, even though I can speak German pretty well, but I fucked up the listening and writing papers. But I'm pretty good at German.
Basic French, can hold a basic conversation in French.
Several Chinese words although I have no idea what they mean, 'mian bao', 'ni hao' (which is how are you I think), 'dao'. And I can count up to ten in Chinese:
Yi, er, san, si, wu, liu, qi, ba, jiu, shi.
I can speak a tiny bit of Russian, by tiny bit, I mean like two lessons worth, so just the basics, hello, goodbye and all that, haha.
